Can I install a ceiling light myself without existing wiring?

You can replace a ceiling light yourself only when a code-compliant ceiling box and switched power already exist; running new wiring or adding a circuit is licensed electrical work and should be done by a qualified electrician. Most DIY hang-ups happen because there’s no power or rated box in the ceiling, which means fishing cable through walls, securing a fan/light–rated box to framing, and sometimes expanding panel capacity. Our team can handle the wiring, new circuits, panel upgrades, and fixture installation as one job, and we regularly do this safely in the Salem area.

Call a pro if you notice any of the following:

  • No existing ceiling box or wall switch wiring
  • Box not marked for fixture/fan support
  • Breaker trips when testing a new run
  • Aluminum wiring or unknown grounding

If you don’t see existing wiring or you’re unsure about capacity, schedule an assessment before opening walls to avoid shock and fire risks.
