Do I need a plumber to unclog a drain or can I DIY?

You can DIY a minor drain clog, but you should call a plumber if water backs up, clogs come back, or more than one fixture slows at the same time. Most stubborn blockages sit deeper in the branch or main sewer line, where home tools can’t remove grease buildup, roots, or a sag in the pipe. If a plunger doesn’t restore full flow in under a minute, the blockage is usually beyond reach. Our team handles these issues routinely in and around Moneta and brings video camera inspections or hydro‑jetting when needed.

Safe DIY steps before you call:

  • Remove the stopper or trap, then plunge with 1–2 inches of water in the fixture.
  • Use a 1/4-inch hand snake for small sink or tub lines; avoid power augers on thin pipes.
  • Skip chemical drain cleaners to prevent pipe and seal damage.

Turn off the fixture if water nears the rim and schedule a professional inspection to identify the root cause.
