How often do backflow preventer valves need to be replaced?

Backflow preventer valves are replaced only when they fail required testing or can’t be reliably repaired, not on a fixed timetable. The most common driver is wear of internal springs and seals combined with mineral buildup, especially on hard-water supplies. Many assemblies are rebuildable with repair kits; replacement becomes the smart choice when repairs won’t restore proper performance or the body is compromised. Annual testing (common in many jurisdictions) is the best way to know when action is needed. Our technicians see this often across the Roanoke–Salem area and find that repeated test failures are the usual tipping point.

Watch for clear replacement signals:

  • Repeated test failures or inability to hold pressure after a rebuild
  • Cracked body, freeze damage, or heavy corrosion
  • Continuous discharge from the relief port
  • Seized or leaking shutoff valves that prevent proper testing

Schedule yearly backflow testing and winterize outdoor assemblies to avoid premature failure.
