What causes a toilet to leak from the base when flushing?

The most common cause of a toilet leaking from the base when flushing is a failed wax ring (the gasket that seals the toilet to the drain). When this seal loosens, cracks, or compresses unevenly, flush water escapes at the floor instead of going down the waste line. Other culprits include a rocking toilet from loose closet bolts, a cracked or corroded flange, or a hairline crack in the bowl.
