What should I do if my toilet won't flush but is not clogged?

A toilet that won’t flush when it isn’t clogged usually means a tank mechanism or water supply problem, not a drain issue. The most common cause is the flapper not lifting or the tank water sitting too low to start the siphon. Our technicians see this often in homes around the Salem–Roanoke area.

Try these quick checks before calling for service:

  • Lift the lid: reattach or shorten the handle chain so the flapper lifts fully.
  • Open the shutoff valve fully and set the float so water stops about 1/2 inch below the overflow tube.
  • Press on the flapper; if it’s warped or gritty and won’t seal, replace it to restore refill.
  • If the fill valve is silent or runs nonstop, replace it; mineral buildup can seize these parts.

If water is running or leaking onto the floor, turn the supply valve clockwise and call a licensed plumber.
