What should I do if my water heater is leaking from the top?

Shut off power and water, then call for service. For electric units, switch off the breaker. For gas units, turn the gas control to off. Close the cold-water shutoff valve on top of the heater. Do not ignore top leaks; they can damage wiring and fittings. If you smell natural gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, evacuate and call 911.
