How can I fix a frozen pipe safely without causing damage?

A frozen pipe should be thawed slowly with gentle, indirect heat while the water is turned on to relieve pressure. Most bursts happen as ice melts and pressure spikes, so the goal is to warm the line evenly and let water trickle as the ice clears.

We see this often around the Moneta area during cold snaps, and careful steps prevent drywall and flooring damage.

  • Open the nearest faucet and leave it slightly running to reduce pressure.
  • Warm the pipe with a hair dryer, heating pad, or warm towels; never use an open flame or torch.
  • Start heating at the faucet end and work back toward the colder section so meltwater can escape.
  • After flow returns, inspect for leaks and listen for dripping in walls; if the pipe is cracked, shut the main valve.

If a pipe has already burst or you smell burning insulation, shut off water and power to the area and call a licensed plumber.
