What Are The Common Problems With A Whole House Water Filter?

The most common problems with a whole-house water filter are pressure drop, clogged or overdue cartridges, exhausted media, leaking or stuck bypass valves, and tastes or odors returning. The usual cause is sediment and scale loading or a system that isn’t sized or maintained for your water quality and usage.

We often see this on both well and city water around Callaway and nearby communities.

  • Watch for slow faucets or showers after good initial flow, which points to a clogged sediment stage.
  • If chlorine, sulfur, or earthy tastes come back, the carbon or specialty media is likely spent.
  • Drips at unions or a handle that won’t seat can indicate a bypass or valve issue.
  • A prefilter pressure gauge showing a big drop vs. post-filter confirms blockage.

A clogged 5-micron prefilter can rob more pressure than a worn carbon tank, so start with the first stage before replacing the whole system. Always shut off water and relieve pressure before opening housings.
