What Should I Do If My Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping Repeatedly?

If your circuit breaker keeps tripping repeatedly, stop resetting it, turn off or unplug the items on that circuit, and have a licensed electrician inspect the issue. The most common cause is an overloaded circuit, but repeated trips can also mean a short, a ground fault, or a failing breaker.

Our electricians handle these calls across the Roanoke area and can separate a simple overload from a panel or wiring problem. A fast re-trip after you reset the handle usually points to a fault, while a trip after several minutes suggests the circuit is carrying more load than it’s designed for. Avoid moving space heaters or high‑draw appliances between outlets on the same circuit; that only shifts the problem, it doesn’t fix it. After-hours emergency service is available when there’s heat, smoke, or a burning smell at the panel.

Call immediately if you notice buzzing at the panel, warmth on the breaker, scorch marks, or a breaker that won’t reset and hold.
