Where should HVAC UV light be installed near the evaporator coil?

HVAC UV light should be installed inside the air handler with direct line-of-sight to the evaporator coil and drain pan, typically on the supply plenum just downstream of the coil. This spot targets the coil surface where moisture can let biofilm grow and degrade airflow and efficiency. On many systems, mounting the lamp on the plenum wall so the beam washes the entire coil face works best; on horizontal units, aiming from above helps reach the pan edges that stay damp. We handle this placement routinely for homeowners across the Roanoke area.

For correct setup, technicians verify:

  • Unobstructed sightline to the coil and pan
  • Safe distance from plastics, wiring, and the blower assembly
  • Service access for lamp replacement without removing the coil
  • Proper labeling and a switched or interlocked power feed per manufacturer instructions

Always shut off power at the disconnect and let the blower stop before opening the air handler.
