Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling The House?

An AC that runs but doesn’t cool usually has restricted airflow, a heat‑transfer problem, or a control/thermostat issue. The most common cause is a clogged air filter or a dirty outdoor coil that can’t dump heat outside. We often see this around Cave Spring during heat waves when small airflow issues snowball into low cooling. A quick technician check is to feel a supply vent: cool but weak often points to airflow; steady but warm often points to refrigerant or an outdoor unit problem.

If you notice any of these, it’s time for service:

  • Dirty or collapsed air filter blocking airflow
  • Outdoor condenser coil packed with lint or debris
  • Refrigerant leak causing low charge and icing
  • Thermostat mis-set, failed sensor, or a tripped float switch

Check the filter and clear debris from the outdoor unit; if air is still warm or ice is present, turn the system off to prevent compressor damage and book a professional diagnosis.
